Simply beautiful. Early modernist Italian Design. Something I can’t quite bring myself to love. Achille Castiglioni however, amazing.
1988
A lamp conceived as an iteration of identical basic elements. Equilateral triangles in polished aluminium hinged together to form the Platonic solid closest to a sphere: an icosahedron (a figure with 20 faces).
This structure is a holding skeleton for the 25/40 watt transparent bulbs with visible filaments and covers the electrical wires. It is almost invisible whether the lamp is lit or not.
The icosahedron comes in three sizes, depending on the different lengths of the side of the triangle: each triangle can hold three, six or ten bulbs, as in the largest version which has a total of 200 bulbs.
This fixture, inspired by the idea of creating a light source to replace the very decorative, classic chandelier with many lights, maintains the same decorative lighting technique, but makes it simple and unified.
The version with 200 bulbs was created to light community areas, large lobbies and rooms where a great deal of light is required.
